Salvador Ready Mix building across from my office window.
Every day I stare out my window at one of the more interesting ‘architectural’ landmarks in Cranbrook. Standing out above the usual sea of box-stores, industrial complexes, and low-lying retail spaces, Salvador Ready Mix has been gracing the local sky-line for decades. The nice towers and silos give it some great negative space, and I’ve been meaning to draw it for a while now. This afternoon being Friday (all designers know that no real work gets done then anyways) I stepped out of the office and sat down on the planter outside to put my pen to paper. This building is also one of the better economic indicators in our area. If we have lots of money flowing, there is lots of building going on. Buildings need concrete, and all concrete in our area comes from this spot. Normally it is a loud, busy place. Lately it’s been really quiet, and very few trucks going through the hopper makes me think we are not out of the woods, economically speaking, just yet. I’ll let you know when the rattle and clank starts up again so you can go buy stocks in mineral futures.

  1. Not so many proles these days. You mean dibs on the painting of the building? Did I tell you that I was planning on painting it? Mustv. Maybe you better save for the one you ‘bought’ already first 🙂
