It’s continually astonishing to me the variety and beauty of wild flowers as they grow in random patches throughout the planet. They grow even if there is no one to stoop and appreciate their beauty. That makes them pretty self-less.

It has been on my mind for a while to paint a few floral paintings. It’s an opportunity to try creating a composition that has a different and more intimate scale than a landscape. I do need to learn more about what kinds of flowers they are so I don’t have to refer to this one as ‘blue flowers near Crawford Bay, BC.’

Pilot Bay Lighthouse was once a critical navigation point for the entire Kootenay Lake. Now it’s a beautifully preserved landmark that affords a beautiful view in three directions. Acrylic on canvas – 8″ x 10″ – SOLD.

I thought it would be fitting to paint a couple of new pieces to help me get my bearings in my new home. This one comes from a photo I snapped out the second-story window of the historic Fernie Library when we were visiting in March trying to decide if Fernie was a good fit for our family. So far we are thoroughly enjoying ourselves.

The poster-child mountains that are visible from Fernie are the Three Sisters, which are quite striking but not that aesthetically pleasing, and the ski hill. A little bit East, however, is this craggy, sweeping lump that fascinates me. I decided it would be the first mountain I would paint in Fernie, and it was. I also think I’ll paint it again soon.

Every year my brother and I go on a trip sometime around the long weekend in May. This year we decided to hit a conference in North Van, then the Sunshine Coast for a few days, then the North Shore again for some mountain biking. I took along a stack of 8 x 10″ canvases and spent some relaxing time painting ‘en plein air’.

This year the Key City Gallery in Cranbrook, BC. is having an open call for artist to create a piece themed around Elizabeth Lake, the bird sanctuary located just outside of the North end of the city. I painted this to enter that show, but unfortunately (fortunately?) it sold and I have to paint another.
